The computing resources of the society are provided for the benefit of its members. The following usage policy was created to ensure that the resources are not abused by some to the detriment of others. At all times, users must obey the law of the land as well as the terms of usage of NUI Galway Information Solutions and Services (ISS) and of HEAnet (Ireland's National Education and Research Network). Just because you can do something, it does not mean that you may!
The committee of the computer society reserves the right to change this policy and associated guidelines at any time. It is the responsibility of individual users to comply with this policy and associated guidelines.
- Computer Society resources shall not be used in such a way that may deemed as wasteful.
- Computer Society resources shall not be used in such a way as to adversely affect others usage of said resources.
- Computer Society resources shall not be used to gain unauthorised access, or attempt to gain unauthorised access, to computing resources of other individuals or organisations.
- Only users that have been granted authorised access by the administrators and/or committee may access Computer Society computing resources. Users may not grant access to their accounts to other individuals. Users may not divulge their Computer Society passwords to others. The Computer Society administrators shall never request password details from a user. Any action performed with a user's account are the responsibility of that user.
- Computer Society resources may not be used for the promotion of illegal activity.- Computer Society resources may not be used for the storage, downloading and/or transmission of copyrighted material without the copyright holders' consent. Examples include: commercial software, music, games, videos, books, images etc.
- Users may not use Computer Society resources for commercial purposes.
- Computer Society resources may not be used for the transmission or publication of material of a defamatory, offensive, discriminatory, obscene or indecent nature.
- Users of Computer Society resources shall respect the privacy of other users.
- Users of Computer Society resources are required to abide by the ICT Regulations of NUI Galway Information Solutions and Services (ISS) and by the Acceptance Usage Policy of the HEAnet.
- Users may not abuse the quota system. Persistently remaining over the set soft quota is not permitted.
- Users may only store files in their home directory or other areas that are designated for that purpose by the administrators.
- Users may not run networked programs (i.e. network daemons) without the express permission of the Chief Administrator.
- Users may not install web based HTTP proxies, including but not limited to PHProxy.
- Users may not run peer to peer clients (p2p software) and/or other file sharing software. Examples include but are not limited to: kazaa, edonkey, BitTorrent, Freenet etc.
- Users may not run permenant processes on the servers. This especially refers to distributed applications such as SETI@home, GIMPS Project (mprime), folding@home. If a users wishs to run a job for a long period of time, they must seek the express permission of the Chief Administrator.
- Users must reduce the priority of resource intensive jobs. (Use the “renice” command.)
- Users must not share their Computer Society account with anyone.
- Users may not distribute copyrighted material without the permission of the copyright holder. This means no “warez”. For this reason, the Admins reserve the right to delete any material hosted on the Society servers without notice.
- Users may not store excessive amounts of data in their home directories. Users may not “hog” disk space.
